Chapter 8

A real Eureka moment is rare, an earthquake in the mind. The effect that would deprive Eeli of his sleep tonight could then be named as an aftershock.

Patrik and Mia had left them at the bus stop near their apartment building. In the car Eeli had felt like a dog waiting near the front door, eager to get outside, and walk around with his favorite human. If he had had a tail, it would have wagged very hard. He could hardly wait for the elevator door to close behind them. They were finally alone, and Eeli didn’t have to hide his delight anymore, did he? No hyenas of the neighborhood or nosy and teasing friends making them both blush, only him and Leo who was leaning against the wall with his left hand while the right one was pushing the elevator buttons. “Maybe we had better call it a night,” he said, not looking at Eeli. “I’m feeling quite drained, for some reason.”

It was only nine P.M. Leo’s voice had this funny…shadow? Which made Eeli wonder if his words were in reality a come-on. Did Leo want him to spend the night with him? Eeli felt the excitement coiling in his stomach. But then Leo turned lifting his head, and Eeli saw how pinched and tired he truly looked.

Eeli had left lights on in the kitchen corner. He had always felt uncomfortable to come home to a dark apartment. His mind could have lingered on all those people irritated by his harmless habit, but surprisingly he paid them no mind now. He wasn’t hungry or thirsty, so after he had undressed, he brushed his teeth, and got into bed. He was surrounded by his new furniture; near the kitchen end of the room stood a small bar table with four stools, and beside his bed was a nightstand which served also as a side table for the armchair. There were even a couple of fancy-shaped floor lamps. The room seemed homier, if cramped, after he had gotten used to all that space.

He had opened his computer and was browsing an issue of his favorite electronics magazine. His eyes were scanning the circuit diagrams he had studied and used many times, not really seeing them, his brain otherwise occupied. He was busy imagining what it would be like if Leo were lying next to him. That kiss…there would be more of those, Eeli was sure. His muscles quivered from desire to feel Leo’s warm touch on his skin, his scent filling Eeli’s nostrils until Eeli would start to think he could live on that aroma alone. He let out a stuttering breath. It would be so nice if…But no, he had to wait. Leo had said he was tired, he wouldn’t appreciate it if Eeli called or texted him, or what would be worse, leaped from his bed, and ran to Leo’s apartment door only in his T-shirt and boxer briefs. The Broom Man, indeed. Eeli had to be patient. He wouldn’t know what to do if Leo too called him selfish.
